Kinds of functional text;

·    Notice
A notice is a sign or printed statement that gives information or a warning to people.
Example :
 

WAIT FOR LIFT DOORS TO CLOSE BEFORE PRESSING BUTTON

·    Caution/warning
A caution is a warning or piece of advice telling you to be careful.
Example :

DANGER! DO NOT GO INTO THE WATER

·    Greeting card
A greeting card is a card, with a picture in front and a message inside, that you send to someone on their birthday or on a special occasion/holiday. 

The function is to express one’s sympathy and care to others.

The purpose is to congratulate someone’s achievement, express sympathy on someone’s, and motivate someone on gaining achievement.

The characteristics are:

1. Clarify a clear purpose
2. use an appraisal diction
3. accurate addressee

Example :

·    Announcement
Announcement is an important or official statement that informs people about something.

The functions are to provide complete and clear information about certain events or occasion.

The characteristics of announcement :

1. straightforward and ease the readers to get information quickly
2. keep it short, inviting, and to the point.
3. clear and complete.
4. for a bad news, make a direct and no – nonsense statement

Example :
    

ANNOUNCEMENT There will be a flag ceremony next Monday. All students must wear white uniforms. Do not be late. Principal

  ·    Letter/email
Letter is a text that consists of addressee, addresser, salutation/opening, content and closure and also the sender.

Example:

Dear Karen, I was so sad to hear the news of Jack's passing few days ago. I had the privilege of working with Jack for quite a few years. He was full of enthusiasm and good humor, and although that was many months ago now, 1 will always remember those happy times. My sincerest commiserations are extended to you Karen. I realize that words are quite useless at this time, but I am sure that when the numbness has passed, you will be able to reflect and look back on the many positive features of Jack's life. He made so many friends and his warmth and sense of humor brightened many a cold dark winter's evening. I know that he will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Yours sincerely, Chris

·    Short message
A short message is a written piece of information that you send/leave to another person.

The characteristic:

1. clear addressee (someone who receive the message)
2. straight forward
3. if it is an instruction state it clearly

Example :

Hey Tina. I don’t think I can meet you tonight because I have to pick up my grandma at the airport. (Tony)

·    Advertisement
Advertisement is a picture and/or set of words used to persuade people to buy a product or use of service, or that gives information about a job that is available.
Example :

Grand Opening Special offer Happy-Happy Mall All items 50% off Start from 28th November until “8th December 2013

·    Invitation
An invitation card is used to invite someone to attend the event like birthday party, wedding ceremony, informal dinner, etc.

 

An invitation card should give information about:

• The name of the event
• When the event will be held
• Where the event will take place
• Additional information (e.g., dress code, RSVP)

Example :

You and Your partner are invited to attend Jessica’s 14 Birthday in Hilton hotel. 20 December 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Jessica
